Each hair follicle has its own life cycle that can be affected by age, diseases, and a wide variety of other factors. The hair life cycle lasts from 2 to 7 years and is divided into the following phases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anagen<\/strong> (growth phase). This is the active phase of hair growth. Up to 80-90% of scalp hairs are growing at any time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catagen<\/strong> (transition phase). During several weeks, hair growth slows as follicles shrink and hair stops growing. About 3% of all hairs are in this phase at any time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Telogen<\/strong> (resting phase). The hair follicle is in complete rest and no longer grows. It&#8217;s not really a disease but a natural condition caused by a combination of genetics, hormone levels, and the aging process.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief that it&#8217;s the cap you wear, your shampoo, or the new hair dye you bought, your parents&#8217; genes play a very important role and may be responsible for your thinning hair. These genes combined with your hormones and environmental factors set the foundation for potential hair loss and baldness development.<\/p>\n<p>However, the exact mode of inheritance and the relative importance of each parent remains unclear. Both men and women experience this type of hair loss, which is the most common cause of hair loss worldwide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In men, it&#8217;s called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedhairclinics.gr\/en\/male-hair-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">male pattern hair loss<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Women experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedhairclinics.gr\/en\/female-hair-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">female pattern hair loss<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regardless of whether it develops in men or women, the medical term is androgenetic alopecia, which is also known as <em>MPB<\/em> (male-pattern baldness).<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the term you use, the genes you inherited cause shrinkage of your hair follicles where hair grows, and eventually hair growth stops. Also, if you exercise, taking anabolic steroids can cause you to lose more hair.<\/p>\n<p>The severity of hair loss depends on the type of medication and dosage, as well as your sensitivity to that medication.<\/p>\n<p>However, in most cases, hair loss is reversible once you stop taking the medication.<\/p>\n<p>Hair loss also occurs after chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and drug treatments, as well as in chronic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re currently taking any of these medications and notice hair loss, contact your doctor. Hormones from the thyroid gland help regulate almost all body functions, including hair growth.<\/p>\n<p>Hyperparathyroidism is the pathological condition caused by overactivity of one or more of the 4 parathyroid glands.<\/p>\n<p>Controlling any of these thyroid conditions with proper treatment can regulate hormones, prevent hair loss, and restore hair growth.<\/p>\n<h4>Pregnancy<\/h4>\n<p>Especially in women, major hormonal changes such as pregnancy, lactation, menstrual disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, and menopause can cause intense hair loss, which is reversible in most cases.<\/p>\n<p>Hormonal imbalances that occur after pregnancy and childbirth can cause hair loss. It takes some time after pregnancy for hormone levels to return to normal, so it&#8217;s not unusual for mothers to notice thin hair or even baldness after giving birth. This usually happens about 3 months after the baby&#8217;s birth. Don&#8217;t worry, as the rest of your body recovers, your hair follicles will recover too. The hair loss is only temporary, and your hair will grow back.<\/p>\n<h4>Testosterone and Dihydrotestosterone<\/h4>\n<p>Without testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), you wouldn&#8217;t have any of your male characteristics, but unfortunately, these hormones play a major role in androgenetic alopecia.<\/p>\n<p>In the body, testosterone is converted to its more &#8220;active&#8221; form, dihydrotestosterone, with the help of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Dihydrotestosterone acts on various organs of the body, including hair follicles. The 5-\u03b1 reductase enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone 3 times more in the frontal area than in the occipital region.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the production of dihydrotestosterone itself that causes hair loss, but the hereditary sensitivity to it. Men with genetically high sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone will experience earlier weakening of their hair follicles.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, dihydrotestosterone shrinks hair follicles and shortens the hair growth cycle. This makes hair grow and appear thinner and more fragile, as well as fall out faster. It can also slow down the growth of new hairs in the follicles when old hairs fall out.<\/p>\n<p>Certain habits can increase dihydrotestosterone levels. Sometimes the desire to get stronger at the gym works against people who are sensitive to androgenetic alopecia. Engaging in behaviors that increase dihydrotestosterone production, such as taking creatine supplements, weight training, or taking anabolic steroids, have the potential to increase hair loss.<\/p>\n<p>Another common cause of hormonal imbalance causing hair loss is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which creates cysts in a woman&#8217;s ovaries. These cysts, although not dangerous, limit estrogen production, resulting in increased testosterone levels in the female body, increasing androgen levels.<\/p>\n<p>Discontinuing certain types of contraceptive medications can cause temporary hormonal imbalance. The natural hair growth cycle can be disrupted, resulting in hair loss, often initially in the form of thinning hair. Such stress can result in up to 75% of hair falling out, sometimes months after the event.<\/p>\n<p>Emotional stress can also lead to hair loss. When we face a life-changing event, such as psychological stress from divorce or separation or poor living conditions with our partner, unemployment or other financial problems, loss of home, serious illness or death of a loved one, or depression, severe emotional stress can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Major emotional stressors can cause temporary hair loss, but once stress is controlled, normal hair growth usually resumes.<\/p>\n<p>There are many long-term observations and statistical studies proving that stress can lead to hair loss. However, scientists haven&#8217;t yet fully decoded the biological mechanism by which chronic stress damages hair follicle stem cells. According to recent Harvard University research, stress causes disturbances in stress-related hormones, especially increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol prolongs the resting phase of hair follicles or even returns hair follicles to this phase. The main cause of trichotillomania is anxiety and stress. It usually begins in childhood or adolescence and can last for several months or many years.
