Propylene glycol enhances drug absorption, helping the active ingredient penetrate the keratin layer and reach deep into the hair follicle base.

Minoxidil foam is available with or without propylene glycol for people with a sensitive scalp. Foams without propylene glycol contain different solvents such as ethyl alcohol, water, glycerin, and special foam stabilizers. The foam is absorbed faster superficially, but its penetration depth is more limited. However, despite the rapid evaporation of its solvents, it creates a minoxidil reservoir on the scalp surface that is gradually absorbed.

                Minoxidil 5% dosage

The usual dose for men is 1ml twice daily, with an interval of at least 8 hours between applications. Start from the center of the treated area and move towards the edges, separating the hair into sections for better skin coverage. A gentle massage with fingertips for 1-2 minutes will facilitate absorption.

Minoxidil foam is applied directly to the skin with 6-8 sprays from the container, corresponding to the recommended dose of 1ml. Distribute the foam evenly with gentle massage movements until it completely disappears.

What to watch out for

Minoxidil application should be done daily at consistent times. Irritation usually manifests as mild redness, itching, or a burning sensation that subsides after 1-2 weeks of continuous use.

A clinical study in 1,333 women showed that 4% of those who used minoxidil 5% developed hypertrichosis, i.e., growth of unwanted hair in other body areas. This side effect is due to systemic absorption of a small percentage of minoxidil by the body and is reversible with treatment discontinuation.

The main precaution for women concerns the risk of hypertrichosis on the face, mainly on the cheeks and forehead. This risk is minimized when the drug is not transferred to other areas and hands are thoroughly washed immediately after application.

If mild irritation appears, temporarily reduce the application frequency to once daily for 1-2 weeks. The gradual increase in frequency allows the scalp to adapt to the product.

Use fragrance-free moisturizing cream on the scalp 1-2 hours after minoxidil absorption to address dryness.
