The 19th World Congress of ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery), held from 14-18 September 2011 in Anchorage, Alaska, USA, was completed successfully.

The conference was attended by hundreds of delegates from around the world, while the biggest names in the field of hair transplant surgery worldwide participated in the congress with highly interesting assignments.

Greece was represented in the Congress by Dr. Anastasios Vekris, Plastic Surgeon and Scientific Director of Advanced Hair Clinics. Dr. Vekris participated as an invited speaker at the roundtable on "Unique issues in ethnic transplantation" theme, where he presented to a packed audience his experience in hair transplant with FUE method concerning patients from around the world and the differences between different ethnic groups.

The speech of Dr. Vekris won the audience's applause and positive feedback from leading hair transplant surgeons who attended, such as Dr John Cole, a pioneer hair transplant surgeon from the U.S. and Dr Francisco Himenez, president of the next world conference that will be held on the Bahamas in October 2012.

During the conference, Dr. Vekris also had the opportunity to follow and discuss with experts from around the world, the latest developments in the field of hair transplant and the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. The participants showed special interest in the new automated FUE techniques (automated & robotic FUE systems) as well as in new, promising treatments i.e. the application of biological components (Acell).

Androgenetic alopecia (baldness) is a very widespread phenomenon. It concerns 30% of white men at the age of 30 and 50% of white men at the age of 50 years. A recent research (2010) conducted by Harokopio University raises the percentage of Greek men who suffer from some degree of alopecia in 38% of the population between the ages of 35 to 40 years.

The problem of hair loss concerns men worldwide since prehistoric times. Apart from humans hair loss has been observed at higher primates (e.g. gorilla) and has a genetic predisposition. It also affects, to a lesser degree, women with hereditary predisposition. The loss of hair over time and in all cultures, was and still is, a matter of serious concern and of psychological problems for people who are suffering from it.

The ancient Greeks described the heroes and warriors having abundant hair while baldness was considered a sign of old age and wisdom. Hair transplant surgery is currently the most popular cosmetic procedure among men in the Western world.

According to the latest figures from ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery), in 2010 was observed a universal increase in hair transplant surgery by 11% compared with 2008, amid economic crisis. People who are suffering from androgenetic alopecia (baldness) show an increasing interest worldwide to deal with their problem in a permanent and natural way, since hair transplant is no longer a taboo. Some interesting statistical data about hair transplant are mentioned below:

  • Worldwide are conducted annually around 300000 hair transplant procedures.
  • The annual increase in hair transplant surgery is estimated at about 20%.
  • About 87% of the total sum of hair transplant surgery concerns men, while the rest 13% concerns women.

The role of the Dermatologist and Plastic surgeon in the diagnosis and treatment of androgenetic alopecia (baldness) with hair transplant surgery is highly important, since researches show that patients undergoing hair transplant initially consult with the dermatologist or plastic surgeon at a rate over 50%.

At Playboy February 2012 issue you can find the article by Dr. Anastasios Vekris titled: "Problem: Hair Loss Solution: Hair Transplant". It is generally known that the grey temples add charm to every man, unfortunately it is not the same for the case of "empty" temples. One of the most common anxieties of older men is the fear of acquiring a “bald” spot. Nowadays the solution is much simpler than everyone thinks.

The fear of becoming bald

It is estimated that 1 in 2 men will face a problem of hair loss or baldness in his lifetime. "Especially in men, the most common cause of hair loss is heredity. In addition the fast pace of life, stress, poor diet habits and the environmental contamination may play a role in increasing the number of men with hair loss problems in recent years" as Dr. Anastasios Vekris suggests. Hair loss is not only an aesthetic problem, but also has serious effects on individuals' psychology, and according to psychological researches hair loss leads to reduced self-esteem and negative influence on personal, social and professional relationships. And of course baldness ages men.

There is a solution

Nowadays skilled dermatologists or plastic surgeons through the proper diagnosis and an appropriate medication are able to delay the progression of hair loss. But what about those people who are already suffering from baldness? For these cases there is a definite permanent solution today, and this is Hair Transplant. The most advanced method is called FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and involves the transfer of healthy hair follicles, one by one, from the back of the head to the bald spots needed. This transfer is done easily and painlessly under local anesthesia, without removing the skin and without causing permanent marks or scars. The transplanted hair grow naturally and provide a permanent and natural coverage. FUE technique does not require any hospitalization or absence from work, as no later than 1 week men patients are back to their normal life activities. The results gradually become visible within a few months after surgery and the final result is permanent.
