yebrow transplant by a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist is intended for people who suffer from congenital absence of the eyebrows, who wish to cover scars from accidents or burns, or who have excessively thinned eyebrows due to waxing, chemical peeling or age. In earlier times there was a trend to thin the eyebrows in women for aesthetic reasons, either by pulling out the hairs (e.g. with tweezers) or with more permanent techniques, such as laser depilation.

In recent years, this trend has reversed and now increasingly more women, both young and middle aged, are seeking more dense and youthful brows. In some cases only thickening of the naturally sparse eyebrows is needed, while other cases, in which prior hair removal has led to permanent thin eyebrows, require partial or total restoration of the missing eyebrows. Restoration of eyebrows can also be performed in cases where alopecia areata has affected the eyebrows, provided that the damage is localised and has been stable for a period of at least one year. Eyebrow transplantation can further serve as permanent restoration of the eyebrows’ density in pathological conditions such as e.g. hypothyroidism.

FUE eyebrow transplantation can be used to treat both men and women of all ages, although most eyebrow restorations concern women aged 30-50. Eyebrow transplantation with FUE is the method of choice in these cases; this minimally invasive method can be performed with microtools in order to avoid the removal of tissue and subsequent scarring of the skin, as opposed to FUT or strip technique which requires removal of a strip of skin from the donor site of the scalp, thus creating a permanent scar. It is the most suitable method because it is virtually painless and does not leave any marks or scars. The appearance of new hairs begins immediately after the completion of the implant session and the final results appear relatively early, within 4-6 months, thanks to the rich blood supply of the area. The growth of new hairs continues even up to 12 months after the eyebrow transplant.

FUE Eyebrow Transplant

Regarding eyebrow transplantation with FUE technique, hair follicles are harvested from the scalp using tools with a very small diameter (0.7-0.8 mm), in order to obtain very fine follicles that mimic the natural eyebrow hairs as much as possible. The eyebrow transplant with FUE method usually requires 1-2 sessions for the best possible results, especially in case of total restoration and if a high density is required.

FUE is an absolutely safe method, provided it is performed by an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon as Dr. Vekris and the medical team of Advanced Hair Clinics. The whole procedure is done under local anaesthesia with lidocaine and adrenalin solution. Due the specific nature of eyebrow transplantation, which is typically performed on female patients and requires follicles of a small diameter from a donor site of limited extent, it is possible to extract hair follicles with FUE without the need to shave the donor site. Usually only a small area of the occipital scalp needs to be cut, otherwise the sessions may be entirely unshaven.

The procedure is preceded by design of the shape and determination of the length and width of each eyebrow, in accordance with the wishes of each individual and the anatomical features of the patient’s face.

One session of eyebrow transplantation with FUE technique may require any number of follicles from a few dozen e.g. for covering a small scar, up to several hundreds for full eyebrow restoration in cases of alopecia areata or serious burns. The hair follicles of small diameter that are required for the eyebrow transplantation are usually obtained by manual or automated extraction; robotic hair transplantation presents some particular difficulties that make it very challenging to export intact hair follicles of a very small diameter and increase the transection rate of the grafts.

The implantation of grafts for eyebrow restoration is a particularly challenging task that requires careful placement under the same angle and direction as the existing eyebrow hairs. The implantation is performed by using a special implanter device which allows positioning of each hair follicle at the proper depth and angle, in order to achieve a natural effect to the maximum possible extent. The postoperative course after eyebrow transplantation is completely smooth with minimal pain, although there is small likelihood of swelling in the forehead during the first days after the procedure.

The patient can resume work or any normal activity or exercise after a few days to a week. The results of the eyebrow transplantaton are permanent and become visible within a few months. Usually, the new hairs that originate from the scalp initially need periodic trimming in order to maintain the correct length, but will gradually acquire the same behaviour and direction as the pre-existing eyebrow hairs.

Cost of FUE eyebrow transplant

The cost of each eyebrow transplantation session depends on whether the procedure concerns only one or both eyebrows, and on the degree of thinning of the hairs, which differs from one patient to the other.
